WE'LL MAKE [ H E A V E N ], A PLACE ON EARTH
09.17.03: Darkness breeds FEAR; but it also gives us hope-
Hope of the GREAT LIGHT to end darkness. DARKNESS GIVES MEANING TO OUR EXISTENCE. -MIN-WOO HYUNG

Having seen SHONEN MANGA (Japan Boys 'comics) take centerstage after a long period of 'alternative' underground status, the same story unfolds - I am left searching for something off the beaten path, and I found it in MAN HWA (Korean comics - which I have tried to get into, but was very hard to import because of its limited audience before TOKYO POP introduced it), I have read a lot of reviews and ASIAWEEK Magazine articles talking about how "anti" Korean artists are against Japanese comics and how they are overwhelming the mainstream. Despite that, the influences are undeniable eventhough Mr. Hyung credits HELLBOY and the immortal Mike Mignola for his style.

The MAN HWA is titled PRIEST is my current infatuation with what is angsty and cutting edge, what is reflection of rebellion by those like minded in finding the terrible purpose in a very ordinary world (what a damn run on sentence).

After drawing the homage panel (based on compilations panels of PRIEST ISSUE#7) I was left gasping. Trying my best to mimic Hyungs art style I could feel what I think was his passion and rage put to ink. Maybe I am imagining things but this is what makes great accidental prophets so great.
The greatest form of art I felt was in one of his backgrounds. Minimalist in nature, it was of a pine tree forest, lit only by the moonlight. If you notice the outline it looks like the wings of a devil. Again it might have been accidental but it touched me and hit close to home. What a great story.
